Sidney A. Gauthreaux, Jr., Ph.D. leads the GMI Wildlife Remote Sensing and Technology program as Technical Director. Dr. Gauthreaux has more than 45 years experience in radar ornithology. He was one of the pioneers in the use of radar to study bird movements in the atmosphere.
As a Professor of Zoology at Clemson University, Dr. Gauthreaux established the Clemson University Radar Ornithology Laboratory in 1990. Since 1992, he has been working with WSR-88D (NEXRAD) radars to archive bird movements displayed on NEXRAD in order to develop national and regional maps of bird migration and important migration stopover areas.
Dr. Gauthreaux has authored over 135 academic publications and has been awarded many academic achievements including the William Brewster Memorial Award and two Department of Defense/Partners in Flight (PIF) Awards.
He was named fellow of several societies including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Deutsche Ornithologen-Gesellschaft, and the American Ornithologists Union. In addition to being a current fellow, he has served as President of the Animal Behavior Society and Chair of the South Carolina Heritage Trust Advisory Board. His active research involves laboratory and field studies of bird migration, orientation, and navigation.
