Integrated Pest Management – A sustainable approach to managing pests by combining biological, cultural, physical and chemical tools in a way that minimizes economic, health, and environmental risks. [Food Quality Protection Act, 110 Stat. 1512 Public Law 104-170, 7 USC 136r-1, SEC. 303, August 3, 1996.]
GMI biologists conducted invasive plant species surveys and on-site interviews to compile data for nine IPMPs across the southern United States. The invasive species control plans included GIS maps showing location and extent of identified species, biological, mechanical, and chemical treatment options, as well as recommendations to minimize future infestations. The IPMPs were developed based up the current pest issues for each installation, again providing multiple management options and techniques.
GMI is working closely with the Navy and other interested stakeholders to update and revise the existing IPMP for GTMO. GMI will perform on-site surveys and data collections, literature research, and develop new pest management strategies based upon past trends and current technologies and the goal of reducing pesticide use. Special considerations will be given to pest species such as hutia and to sensitive species endemic to GTMO.
