Amy Whitt awarded Certified Environmental Educator distinction

PLANO, TEXAS (June 11, 2007)

Amy Whitt, a marine mammal biologist in the Plano office, was recently awarded the Environmental Education Certification by the State of North Carolina and The Office of Environmental Education for completing over 200 hours of professional development experiences in environmental education. North Carolina is one of the first states to develop a certification program for environmental educators in the U.S. Required components of the program include instructional workshops, outdoor experiences, knowledge of environmental education resources and facilities, teaching experience, and an action partnership project.

Amy began working towards this certification while attending graduate school at Duke University in North Carolina. She completed much of her teaching experience component at inner city schools in Durham, North Carolina and the Smyrna Middle School in Smyrna, North Carolina. Amy also led many marine science field trips while attending Duke University’s Marine Lab in Beaufort, North Carolina. To complete the action partnership requirement, Amy worked with dolphin watch tour operators in Clearwater, Florida and developed an informational display to enhance the knowledge of marine mammals and conservation in the local community. Amy recently completed her last instructional workshop requirement at the Heard Museum in McKinney.
