Pete Gehring, GMI's GIS Manager in Plano, is working on a
guide for the identification of marine mammals, which will
be published by Elsevier/Academic Press this summer. The
primary author is Dr. Thomas Jefferson, a visiting scientist
at NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service Southwest
Science Center in La Jolla, California. Tom has been a
subcontractor to GMI on the MRA's for several years and has
contributed to the SOCAL, PAC NW, Gulf of Alaska, Marianas,
and Japan MRAs, and is a noted expert on the ranges of
marine mammals. Other contributors include Dr. Mark Webber
of U.S. Fish and Wildlife who is the pinniped expert,
several other subject area experts, an illustrator in
Australia, and Nina Lisowski who is the graphic designer.
Pete is creating the maps for the guide. There are 128 maps corresponding to one range map/species; including odontocetes (toothed whales, dolphins, porpoises), baleen whales, pinnipeds (seals), sirenians (manatees, dugong), and the carnivores (sea otters, polar bear). The team has been working on the book for over a year, and they are in the final stages before it goes to print.
