GMI Scientists Present Papers at African Conference

PLANO, TEXAS (December 26, 2007)

Amy Whitt, Dagmar Fertl, and Greg Fulling, marine scientists from the Plano office, recently attended the 17th Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals in Cape Town, South Africa. The conference was held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre November 29 – December 3. The conference is a gathering of marine mammalogists and other scientists from around the world and is held under the auspices of the Society for Marine Mammalogy.

Over 800 scientists including Whitt, Fertl and Fulling, presented the results of recent research in the field of marine mammal science. After the conference, GMI scientists spent some time traveling around South Africa and the Cape Town area.

The titles of the GMI presentations were as follows:

  • Fertl, D., and T.A. Jefferson. Common dolphins (Delphinus spp.) are not common south of Cape Hatteras, nor in the Gulf of Mexico or Caribbean. (Poster presentation)
  • Fulling, G.L., J.C. Cotton, J.A. Rivers, and P.H. Thorson. Sei (Balaenoptera borealis) and Bryde’s (B. edeni/brydei) whale co-occurrence in the Mariana Islands during the boreal winter. (Poster presentation)
  • Whitt, A.D., T.A. Jefferson, D. Fertl, and D. Rees. An annotated checklist of marine mammals of Cuba. (Poster presentation)
  • Zoidis, A.M., M.A. Smultea, A.S. Frankel, J.L. Hayes, A.J. Day, S.A. McFarland, A.D. Whitt, and D. Fertl. Sounds attributed to a humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) calf verified by a two-element array. (Poster presentation)
